ASOBAGRI was founded in 1989 by K'anjob'al Mayan coffee and cardamom farmers. A difficult period of political violence and poverty followed that caused many small famers to leave their land. However, ASOBAGRI has gained strength each year since, with a growing dedication to produce high-quality, shade grown coffees. This cooperative is also committed to investing back into their communities. Their education fund helps provide scholarships and school supplies. They give workshops in organic production, assist in funding health care and help to repair and construct new roads. ASOBAGRI also provides small business loans to women. As a result there are now more than 50 women-owned businesses in the community that help supplement and support their families.
