Karie - Small Holder Farmers
Karie is made up of small holder farmers with approximately 150 - 200 trees each. The majority of the farmers speak Kikuyu. They wake up very early in the morning, before the sun comes out, to start milking their cows and preparing sweet potatoes or arrow root washed down with Chair. This meal boosts their energy for the better part of the day. Young boys are sent to field to tend to the grazing cows and goats while other youth and elders ('wazee') go to the farms to work on the coffee trees. The majority of the farms are small and most farmers exercise mixed farming, including pulses, napier grass (for feeding the dairy cows) and maize. Macadamia trees and bananas provide shade for the coffee trees and are important cash crops. This coffee was grown in red volcanic soil rich in organic matter at 1800 meters above sea level.
